Though summer’s sand and surf are now just happy memories, there’s no reason you have to put your weekend bag in storage. These three destinations will help you make the most of the fall season, plus, one tasty staycation idea, for those who can’t get away.
For some Southern flavor head to Charlottesville, Virginia (above) and turn leaf peeping into an adventure sport by hopping into a hot air balloon. There’s no better vantage point to view the glorious colors of the oak, poplar and ash trees than from the basket of a hot air balloon. When you’re done, toast your ride with a fall-inspired cocktail.
Green Mountains, Vermont
Break out the L.L. Bean and your bicycle and pedal through the scenic Green Mountains. Along the breathtaking 18-mile stretch of Route 108 that connects Stowe and Jeffersonville via Smugglers’ Notch you’ll see fiery orange-red maple trees and vibrant yellow birch trees. Stop in Stowe to grab lunch and catch your breath—this is a hilly ride!
The East Coast doesn’t have a lock on fall travel—head to Vail, Colorado for an action-packed weekend. Peak leaf-peeping season usually hits in September, but you can still take advantage of off-season deals and all the outdoor sports you can handle from hiking to mountain biking to zip lining.
If your budget or limited vacation days mean you can’t get away—or if you live somewhere that is already perfect in the fall—create a mini escape with delish fall-flavored inspired cocktail:
