UPDATE: A reader asked how I prepped my hair before we used the Beachwaver. I had a blowout that was pretty straight two days prior. We used hairspray after the curls were set.

Since she was co-hosting Monday night’s Met Ball, it’s only fitting that Carey Mulligan stood out even among all the fabulous celebrities, models and designers. Here’s how to recreate her makeup and hair:

Usually when designing the look for a big event, I seek inspiration in multiple areas but seeing as this is the Met Gala, all of the inspiration came from the dress! Her dress is a true work of art and reminded me of a modern day glamorous gladiator so I wanted her eyes to look fierce!

Face
I used Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15 all over to even out her skin tone and give a flawless finish. A light dust of Chanel Natural Finish Pressed Powder in Clair was used to take the edge off the shine. On Carey’s cheeks, I used Chanel Powder Blush in Fandango on the apples of her cheeks blended back to give her definition and a soft glow.

Eyes
Carey’s eyes were my main focus. I used Chanel Eyeshadow Duo in Noir-Ivoire all over her eye lid blending ever so slightly up above the natural crease of her eye, pulling it out to the sides of her eyes to give her a sharper and more dramatic edge. Then, I layered Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir to finish her eyes. I wanted Carey’s eyebrows to be strong and structured so I used Chanel Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Brun to create this effect.

Lips
I used Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour in Beige Felin; this was the perfect lipstick to finish off her Met Gala look.

Hair by Jenny Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist

With this stunning dress, her hair needed to play the right part. I wanted her to look cool but with a bit of an edge.

1. I applied Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Whipped Cream Mousse on her wet hair and layered with Suave Professionals Volumizing Root Boost Spray. Next, blow dry sides away from the face, then blow dry the top of hair with a medium round brush (also directing hair away from the face). This will give the hair extra volume on top.

2. Take a “U” shaped section off the top of the head and clip it away to be styled later.

3. Spray Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo all over hair to refresh before creating the updo in the back.

4. To create the updo, split hair down the middle in the back. Start with one side and twist up and inward, towards the center, and secure with bobby pins. Be sure to crisscross bobby pins for a secure hold. Do the same on the other side.

5. Use fingers to work the top to your desired height (no need to make it perfect – keep it a little undone to contrast the tight updo) and finish with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray to set the style.

I’ve tried the shampoo and conditioner myself and while my hair is full to begin with and I’m usually looking to tame it; using Volume Extend was a fun diversion. My hair was much fuller, didn’t fall flat, and, most importantly for me, even though I was rocking some seriously big-like-Texas hair, it wasn’t frizzy.
